Restaurant Spotlight: Ward 6 Eastside

Found in a historic structure on Payne Avenue, Ward 6 is a popular spot for food, beer and plenty of fun. The building dates back to 1885 and used to be an old saloon before Hamm's Brewery bought it in 1903. Hamm's built the wooden bar, which is still in use today.

The building has seen many owners and many different bars over the years. It was even residential for nearly 20 years. However, Murph Dawkins purchased the building around a decade ago and started restoring it. She wanted to open a cafe, but never made it that far.

It was bought Eric and Bob, the current owners, and turned into Ward 6. They opened the new spot in December of 2012 and have been serving good food and beer ever since.

The Menu

You will find plenty of interesting items on the menu including plenty of items perfect for drinking a beer with. Some of the favorites include:

  • Ward 6 Reuben

They even serve a full breakfast from 8am to 11am daily with items such as the Breakfast Poutine, Dutch Baby, Quiche, Welsh Rabbit and more. On Saturday and Sunday, Ward 6 provides brunch from 9am to 2pm with options, such as Corned Beef Hash, Eggs Benedict, Biscuits and Gravy and more.

The Beer

Ward 6 is all about local beer. They carry as many local products as possible and all except two beers are made locally. Hamm's is one of those beers and the other is a rotating seasonal tap. Since Hamm's once owned the building, they figured this was a good way to pay tribute. Beers you will find on the menu include:

  • And More!

Along with the excellent beers, you can enjoy wine, cocktails and adult milkshakes, such as the Hipshaker, Strawberry Dreamshake, Sour Sophie and more.

Location and Hours

Ward 6 is found at 858 Payne Avenue in Saint Paul. They are open from 8am to 11pm on Monday through Thursday, 8am to 12am on Friday, 9am to 12am on Saturday and from 9am to 11pm on Sunday. The kitchen closes one hour before closing time and is closed from 2pm to 2:30pm on Saturday and Sunday.
