St. Paul Bits & Pieces

Posted by Kris Lindahl on Friday, January 30th, 2015 at 12:00pm.

The biggest thing going on this weekend – not only for St. Paulians, but for Americans, is the Super Bowl. That said, however, I came across several bits of other news that might be of interest.

Super Bowl Weekend!

Sunday is the day and whether you’re a Pats or a Seahawks fan, celebrating is the name of the game. Just a heads up, though, that the police will be out in full force all weekend. According to TwinCities.com, 24 percent more people get popped for DWI this weekend than in the week before and the week after the Super Bowl.

So Minnesota troopers will be adding extra patrols.

If you prefer watching the Super Bowl with loads of others, there are a few bars in town with big screens and where the beer and food will be flowing. Red Cow, at 393 Selby, is a good choice, as is Obb’s Sports Bar & Grill (19 high definition flat screen TVs) at 1347 Burns Avenue.

Make sure you either cab it or take along a designated driver.

Internet Cat Video Film Festival

Not being a cat person I don’t understand the attraction but I’m obviously in the minority. The Internet Cat Video Film Festival draws upwards of 11,000 attendees and it’s coming to St. Paul.

Last year, the third for the event, it was held in Minneapolis at the Walker Art Center. This year it’s coming to the St. Paul Saints Stadium.

If you missed it last year, the Internet Cat Video Film Festival features the best and most popular online cat videos. Last year, people actually brought their cats to the event.

This year it will be held on August 12 and tickets will be $10. You can purchase them as of June 2 and you should buy them early if you hope to attend because, like I said, it’s a popular event and tickets may sell out.

Up go your Property Taxes

Property taxes aren’t due until mid-May, but get ready to pay more this year.  In fact, your taxes will increase 2.4 percent to help pay for the city’s new paid parental leave policy. While Mayor Chris Coleman believes it will cost $200,000 this year, he expects the costs to rise in subsequent years as older employees retire and younger ones move in.

Happy Super Bowl weekend!
