Purchase a Home in the U.S.
The world is shrinking more every day. It’s to the point that purchasing real estate in another country – something almost unheard of decades ago – is commonplace.
The National Association of Realtors claims that foreign buyers purchased in excess of $68 billion in U.S. residential real estate between 2012 and 2013. In fact, international buyers make up more than 6 percent of total home sales in the U.S.
Whether you hope to purchase American real estate as a vacation property, an investment or to move here permanently you’ll find the process a bit challenging. These challenges can be overcome, however, if you use an experienced real estate agent to represent you in the purchase.

Out Of Country Purchasers: The Process
It’s a good idea to get to know the basics of U.S. real estate transactions in advance of searching for a property. You will no doubt find that they are quite different than those in your home country.
Each of our 50 states has its own real estate laws, so not only does the process differ from your country to ours, but from state-to-state as well. Some general rules include the following:
- U.S. real estate agents require a license to practice.
- Real estate listing information in each region is contained in a proprietary database known as the Multiple Listing Service, or MLS for short.
- Only real estate agents and brokers have access to the MLS so the information you may find online at real estate aggregator sites such as Trulia and Zillow may be unreliable. Here in Saint Paul, Kris Lindahl is your best source for listing information.
- Real estate buyer’s agent services are free to the home buyer. The seller pays all real estate commissions.
If possible, pay a visit to the city to tour the various neighborhoods before settling on one. St. Paul is a city with 17 distinct neighborhoods, each with something different to offer. You can find information on each of these neighborhoods right here on SaintPaulRealEstate.com.
Regardless of why you want to purchase residential real estate in the U.S., the Kris Lindahl Team is dedicated to helping you find exactly what you want. Contact us for more information about real estate or fill out the form below.
